Overview:

The growing problems caused by toxic work environments, client issues, and heavy workloads in the legal profession are the prevailing reasons for the increasing number of legal experts suffering from substance use and other mental health issues. These, along with other challenges that are further worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasize the need for lawyers, law firms and organizations to come up with wellness programs and initiatives that will mitigate the risks of professional dysfunction and maintain the well-being of lawyers.

Listen as behavioral health expert Cari Guthrie Cho (Cornerstone Montgomery) and Attorney Susan B. Ramsey (Mclaughlin & Stern LLP) provide the audience with emerging substance use and mental health issues in the legal profession. Speakers, among other things, will offer practical tips and management strategies to create a safe and healthy working environment for lawyers.

Cari is a licensed social worker working in community mental health for over 30 years.  She started her career on an inpatient psychiatric unit and then moved to community based programs.  She received her MSW in 1995 and worked for Johns Hopkins Bayview Capitation Program for 3 years.  She went to Threshold Services in 1997 and served in various administrative positions from Program Director to Chief Operating Officer.  Ms. Cho implemented evidence based practices, including Integrated Treatment for Co-occurring Disorders, Motivational Interviewing, Supported Employment, and Stages of Change.  In 2012, Threshold Services merged with St. Luke’s House and became Cornerstone Montgomery.  Ms. Cho is the President and CEO. She is on the Board for the Maryland Behavioral Health Solutions provider network and Nonprofit Montgomery.

Susan B. Ramsey, Partner
Mclaughlin & Stern LLP

Ms. Ramsey’s professional experience began as a Registered Nurse in the Intensive Care Unit at Yale New Haven Hospital. While pursuing her Bachelors’ Degree, she was a Counselor with the New Haven Rape Crisis Program. During her time working as a registered nurse, Ms. Ramsey attended law school. Ms. Ramsey graduated from City University of New Law School at Queens College.

Ms. Ramsey is currently a member of the Palm Beach County Sober Home Task Force, Pro Bono Counsel to the Florida Association of Recovery Residences.  She is privileged to represent survivors of sexual assault, poor substance abuse treatment and other catastrophic injuries.
