  1. Data modernization defined – data modernization is moving from legacy databases to cloud platforms and scalable architectures. Some keywords to keep in mind are scalability, high-speed access, accessibility, and cost-optimization. Better accessibility brings new risks and challenges.
  2. Risks of data modernization – data privacy and security. Data privacy becomes an issue because the information may be more accessible to those on the platform. Data security also becomes a larger issue because now the data is hosted by a third party and there are a larger number of access points.
  3. Think data governance – many organizations focus on scalability which may cause data sprawl issues. A key concept to keep in mind is data minimization. If personal data is being collected and analyzed, businesses should consider whether the migrating systems take into account privacy by design.
