Cleve B. Tyler, PhD, is a managing director at Berkeley Research Group, LLC who specializes in applying economic analyses to antitrust, intellectual property, and damages issues. Dr. Tyler is an economist with more than 25 years of experience who has provided expert testimony more than two dozen times in almost 50 cases. He has analyzed economic and damages issues across many industries such as waste collection and disposal, technology platforms, and enterprise software. Dr. Tyler also teaches, writes, and speaks about competition and intellectual property topics. He teaches graduate-level courses in industrial organization and microeconomics in Johns Hopkins University’s applied economics program. Dr. Tyler is an author of the book Assets and Finance: Calculating Intellectual Property Damages, 2024-2025 Edition, published by Thomson-Reuters.
Steven Gawthorpe, PhD, Associate Director
Berkeley Research Group, LLC
Steven Gawthorpe, PhD, is a data scientist with more than ten years of experience. He specializes in open-source intelligence techniques for investigating financial crime and corruption.
His technical expertise includes machine learning (ML) and natural language processing, and he plays a pivotal role in the development of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) solutions at BRG. His work spans a diverse range of AI/ML applications, from information retrieval and named-entity recognition to text generation and computer vision.
Before joining BRG, Dr. Gawthorpe served as the senior data scientist and project lead for the Drugs Monitoring Platform (DMP) at the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime. In this capacity, he developed an innovative AI solution that continuously extracts global news content related to illicit drug seizures.
