New Jersey CLE Requirements

Whether you’re an experienced or newly admitted New Jersey attorney, here’s what you need to know about the NJ CLE rules and how to get your New Jersey CLE Requirements fulfilled with a Knowledge Group CLE Bundle.

New Jersey CLE Requirements: All attorneys admitted to practice in New Jersey shall complete twenty-four (24) credit hours of continuing legal education including at least five (5) credit hours of ethics and/or professionalism. Two (2) of the five (5) credit hours dedicated to professionalism and ethics must involve the successful completion of qualifying coursework focused on diversity, inclusion, and the elimination of bias.

Compliance Deadline: December 31

Reporting Deadline: Each attorney admitted in New Jersey is permanently assigned to one of two compliance groups.

Group 1 Compliance: Attorneys born from January 1 through June 30 must certify their compliance on the Annual Attorney Registration Statement of each even numbered year next following the completion of a compliance period;

Group 2 Compliance: Attorneys born from July 1 to December 31 must certify their compliance on the Annual Attorney Registration Statement of each odd numbered year next following the completion of a compliance period.

Compliance Cycle: Biennial

Approval of Programs

NJ CLE Requirements Approval of Programs: The Knowledge Group does not submit application for CLE credits in New Jersey. TKG webcasts are pre-approved in California thus, attendees may claim credits in New Jersey through reciprocity. Attendees seeking approved credits should send an email to [email protected] for more information.

New Jersey attorneys who are satisfying the CLE requirement of another mandatory CLE state or who take courses approved for CLE by another state will receive 1:1 credit for courses approved in that jurisdiction through reciprocity. However, attorneys should be aware that there are differences in requirements from state to state. Attorneys relying on reciprocity must ensure that they are also meeting the requirements of New Jersey’s program. BCLE Reg. 201:4

New Jersey CLE Program Format: The Knowledge Group webcasts qualify as alternative verifiable learning formats in New Jersey. Attorneys who reside in, work in, and are licensed in a mandatory CLE jurisdiction that allows for 100% of CLE courses to be taken through alternative verifiable learning formats shall, through reciprocity, be able to satisfy their CLE obligation in New Jersey through 100% alternative verifiable learning formats. BCLE Reg. 201:8 View our list of LIVE Webcasts and Recorded Webcasts.

NJ CLE Reporting Procedure: The Knowledge Group does not report attendance in New Jersey. Attorneys must maintain possession of their Certificates of Attendance for at least three years. In the event of an audit, attorneys will be asked to produce those records to verify compliance.

New Jersey CLE Requirements For Newly Admitted Attorneys: Newly admitted attorneys in the state of New Jersey must take fifteen (15) of the twenty-four (24) credit hours in five of the following nine subject areas: NJ basic estate administration; Basic estate planning:  Civil or criminal trial preparation; Family law practice; Real estate closing procedures; Trust and business accounting; Landlord/tenant practice; Municipal court practice; and Law office management.

COVID-19 Update: The Supreme Court of New Jersey Board on Continuing Legal Education has issued an order that effective immediately and until further order of the Court, the live classroom instruction requirement is relaxed. All twenty-four credit hours for the compliance period may be fulfilled through approved courses offered in alternative verifiable learning formats.
