Iowa CLE Requirements

Whether you’re an experienced or newly admitted Iowa attorney, here’s what you need to be in the know about the IA CLE rules and how to get your Iowa CLE Requirements fulfilled with a Knowledge Group CLE Bundle.

Iowa CLE Requirements: Attorneys in Iowa must complete a total of 15 CLE credits, including at least one (1) credit in Ethics and one (1) credit in Diversity & Inclusion or Attorney Wellness.

Compliance Deadline: December 31

Reporting Deadline: March 10

Compliance Cycle: Annual

Approval of Programs: The Knowledge Group does not automatically submit CLE application for all our programs in Iowa. Attendees seeking approved credits should send an email to [email protected] for more information.

Program Format: The Knowledge Group LIVE Webcasts qualify as live in Iowa. There is no limit to the number of credits an Iowa attorney can earn via live webcasts. View our list of LIVE Webcasts.

The Knowledge Group Recorded Webcasts qualify as unmoderated activities in Iowa. Attorneys are limited to six (6) credit hours of unmoderated activities per compliance period. View our list of Recorded Webcasts.

IA CLE Reporting Procedure: The Knowledge Group submits attendance report for approved courses to Iowa Commission on CLE.

In order to protect the public and aid the legal profession at this time, The Iowa Supreme Court has issued an order allowing attorneys to complete all 15 hours of their requirement online through webinars or on-demand programming effective March 16, 2020.

For Newly Admitted Attorneys

Iowa CLE Requirements For Newly Admitted Attorneys: Newly-admitted attorneys in the state of Iowa must complete a Basic Skills Course. Lawyers admitted by examination in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 must complete the course within one year of their actual date of admission. The basic skills course requirement does not apply to lawyers admitted by examination during 2015 or thereafter, and does not apply to lawyers admitted to practice on motion.
